Uniform

Wearing a uniform is comfortable and practical. It means no one feels left out and helps everyone feel part of the group. Our uniform consists of a sweatshirt (or shirt for the scout section) that you can sew badges on and a coloured scarf or 'necker' to represent your local group. There are lots of other optional accessories you can wear such as hats, hoodies, trousers or shorts.

A uniform can either be bought from our online shop (the Scout Store) or from our local Basingstoke Scout Store shop. If you’re not sure where to start, leaders can give you more information about what to buy and where to buy it. The staff in the local Scout Store are also very knowledgeable / helpful and they will guide you through the process and assist you in working out what you need.

Leaders may know if someone is selling a uniform second hand, or may know of some second hand jumpers / shirts within the group. There are grants available to help you buy a uniform, ask your leader for more details.

Scouts

Wear a uniform during their weekly meetings and sometimes on trips away, depending on where they're going and what they're doing. Usually, this consists of a teal green shirt or blouse with badges sewn on, which they pair with a scarf, known as a necker.

Alongside their shirts, Scouts might wear the accompanying blue uniform trousers or skirt, or they might save their uniform bottoms to wear for special occasions like awards ceremonies and public events – choosing to wear something more casual with their shirt during the week. Optional accessories such as hats, hoodies, are also available.

How to roll your necker

One of the hardest things to get right in Scouts is a neat, well rolled necker! It sounds so easy to roll a necker, but you would be surprised at how hard it can be.

Here is a helpful video to show you how to get that perfect neatly rolled necker.
Top Tips
  • Roll the necker as tight as you can in the centre, don't worry about the 2 sides as you can sort them out after you have rolled the body of the necker. Once rolled, hold the roll tight in the centre and shake out a couple of times (this should sort out most of the side rolls) if it needs more attention; roll the ends around in the direction of the spiral to even out the roll.

  • Once you have a neatly rolled necker if you lightly iron over the rolls, it will keep and hold them in place better for longer.
